Nagaibaki
Nagaibaki
a small ethnic group of Tatars living in Verkhneural’sk Raion, Cheliabinsk Oblast, and in Bashkir ASSR.
The language of the Nagaibaki is Tatar with an admixture of Bashkir. Believers among them follow the Russian Orthodox faith; the Nagaibaki became Christians in the second half of the 16th century. They are descendants of the Nogai Tatars who did not leave with the majority of the Nogai Horde but instead settled on the Ik River (tributary of the Kama) after the capture of Kazan and the annexation of Bashkiria by the Russian state. After the construction of the Nagaibak Fortress in 1736 (now a village in Bashkir ASSR), the Nagaibaki were organized as the Nagaibak Cossacks. In the 1840’s, some of the Nagaibaki were resettled in present-day Cheliabinsk Oblast.
