Klarjeti

Klarjeti

 

a historical region in the southeastern section of the Black Sea area, in the Coruh River Basin (in the present-day Artvin Vilayet of Turkey).

In the third century BC., Klarjeti became part of the Kartli Kingdom. In the early ninth century the Tao-Klarjeti principality was formed in the territories of Klarjeti and Tao, which lies just south of Klarjeti. In 1008, Klarjeti became part of the united Georgian kingdom, and in the 15th century and the first half of the 16th it belonged to the Meskhian principality of Samtshke-Saatabago. In 1552 it was captured by Turkey. In 1878, part of Klarjeti became Russian, but it was returned to Turkey in 1918.
