A phase of bipolar disorder which is characterised by a days- to months-long period of elation, hyperactivity, inflated self-esteem, distractability and insomnia.
The depressive phase is characterised by inertia, loss of self-esteem, withdrawal, sadness and a risk of suicide; in either, there is often dependence on alcohol or substances of abuse.
Bipolar disorder appears between age 15 and 25; it affects men and women equally.

Q. what causes manic depression disorder?? how do you become bipolar?A. ost scientists now agree that there is no single cause for bipolar disorder (manic depression).there is a strong genetic connection to it, but there are also unknown environmental causes. they know this from research on identical twins, one twin can have an outburst and the other- none. but from what i read there is extensive research on that area with all those new imaging equipment, so i guess we are close then ever to finding out :)
