Bhagwati Charan Verma

Born Aug. 30, 1903, in the village of Safipur, Unnao District. Indian writer. Writes in Hindi.

Bhagwati Charan Verma graduated from the University of Allahabad in 1928. He first wrote love lyrics—the collections A Drop of Honey (1931) and Song of Love (1937); later he created works of great social significance—for example, the collection Man (1940) and the widely known novel Chitralekha (1934), which poses moral and ethical problems. The novel Toys of One’s Own (1957) exposes the life of the propertied privileged class. The book Forgotten Pictures (1959) depicts the attitude of the well-to-do strata of society toward the national liberation movement of 1880 through 1930. He also writes short stories and plays.
