the largest complex hydraulic-engineering installation in India. Situated on the Sutlej River, primarily in Punjab State. It includes several hydroelectric power plants with a total established capacity of 1.2 million kW, as well as 4,500 km of irrigation canals (including the distributive network) designed for the irrigation of 1.5 million ha of land. It was built between 1948 and 1970. It is the main source of electric power and the base for the development of the agriculture and industry of northwestern India.
