Mikhail Nikolaevich Romanov

Born Oct. 13 (25), 1832, in St. Petersburg; died Dec. 5 (18), 1909, in Cannes, France. Grand duke; the fourth son of Emperor Nicholas I; field marshal (1878).

In 1852, Mikhail Nikolaevich became quartermaster general. He was vicegerent in the Caucasus and commander of the Caucasus Army from 1862 to 1865. He led the troops of the Caucasus Military District from 1865 to 1881. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78 he was commander in chief of the Caucasus Army. He was chairman of the State Council from 1881 to 1905. Mikhail Nikolaevich represented the interests of conservative circles of the dvorianstvo (nobility and gentry).
