A devout Episcopalian, L'Engle served as librarian and writer-in-residence at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York City, for more than 30 years. She wrote more than 50 books, including adult and juvenile fiction, poetry, and autobiography. Her best-known A Wrinkle in Time (1962; Newbery Medal), a mixture of science fiction and fantasy with a coming-of-age theme, is part of a series known as the Time Quintet. Another well-known series of five books begins with Meet the Austins (1960) and follows that family over several years. Among her adult works are the Crosswicks Journals, a series of four memoirs.L'Engle, Madeleine (b. Camp)(1918– ) writer; born in New York City.
