Born Nov. 10 (23), 1912, in Yerevan. Soviet statesman; Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1950). Member of the CPSU since 1942.
Arutiunian was born into a doctor’s family. He graduated from the V. V. Kuibyshev Military Engineering Academy in Moscow (1936). He is a doctor of technical sciences. From 1941 to 1945 he served in the Soviet Army. From 1945 to 1961 he was engaged in scientific work at the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR; from 1952 to 1956 he was secretary-academician of the Department of Technical Sciences, from 1960 to 1961 vice-president of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, and from 1961 to 1963 rector of Yerevan State University. Since April 1963 he has been president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR and vice-president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. At the Twenty-third Congress of the CPSU (1966) he was elected a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the CPSU. A member of the Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia, he was a deputy to the sixth and seventh convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded three orders and also medals.
