Nahas Pasha, a jurist of petit bourgeois background, was one of the organizers of the Wafd Party. For his participation in the national liberation movement, he was exiled by the British colonial authorities to the Seychelles Islands from 1921 to 1923. From 1924 to 1927 he was general secretary, and from 1927 to October 1952 chairman, of the Wafd; from October 1952 to January 1953 he was honorary chairman. In 1928, 1930, 1936—37, 1942–44, and from 1950 until Jan. 26, 1952, he was prime minister of Egypt. Nahas Pasha retired from political life in 1954.
