Leningrad Decorative Glass Factory

transformed in 1949 from a plate-glass factory in which a workshop of decorative glass had been founded on the initiative of A. N. Tolstoi, the sculptor V. I. Mukhina, and the technologist N. N. Kachalov in 1939–40. Articles produced there include individual pieces (decorative vases and the like) and serial production (dinner or tea services, sets of containers for water, and the like), which are distinguished by classic simplicity, precise architectonics, and severe refinement. Typically “glass” means of decoration (“Venetian filament,” diamond facet) serve to reveal the form of the object. The artists A. A. Uspenskii, N. A. Tyrsa, V. I. Mukhina, B. A. Smirnov, A. M. Ostroumov, and L. O. Iurgen contributed a great deal to the improvement in artistic quality of articles produced at the Leningrad Decorative Glass Factory.
