Leningrad Health Resort Region

a coastal strip, measuring 40 km long and 2–6 km wide, of the Karelian Isthmus, from Sestroretsk to the mouth of the Ioninioka River; it stretches along the northeastern and northern coasts of the Gulf of Finland.

The region includes the following health resorts and resorttype settlements: Sestroretsk, Solnechnoe, Repino, Komarovo, Zelenogorsk, Ushkovo, Serovo, Molodezhnoe, Smoliachkovo, and Chernaia Rechka. The distance from Leningrad to the nearest (Sestroretsk) and farthest (Smoliachkovo) points is 35 and 70 km by land and 40 and 60 km by water through the gulf. A ridge of sand dunes and wooded hills stretches along the coast. Lakes Shchuch’e, Kaiavan, Lampi, and Krasavitsa are located in the region. Summers are moderately warm (mean July temperature, 18.5°C), and winters moderately mild (mean January temperature, — 9°C). Annual precipitation totals 600 mm.

The principal therapeutic remedies are aerotherapy, thalassotherapy, and heliotherapy. There are sanatoriums for people suffering from cardiovascular diseases and diseases of the nervous system, as well as sanatoriums for children.
