Kluyver, Albert Jan

Born June 3, 1888, in Breda; died May 14, 1956, in Delft. Dutch microbiologist and biochemist.

Kluyver studied at the Technical University in Delft, where he obtained the degree of doctor of technical sciences in 1914. From 1916 to 1921 he served as a consultant for the Department of Agriculture, Industry, and Trade on the island of Java. From 1921 to 1956 he was head of the department of general and applied microbiology and microbiological laboratories of the Technical University. His main research dealt with industrial microbiology, the physiology and biochemistry of soil microorganisms, and the biological fixation of nitrogen. Kluyver was a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences (1950) and the Royal Society of London (1952).
