Born Sept. 7 (17), 1688, in Moscow; died Feb. 26 (Mar. 8), 1760, in Paris. Russian diplomat; count (1742); brother of Chancellor A. P. Bestuzhev-Riumin.
Bestuzhev-Riumin was Russia’s resident minister in Sweden (1721–26 and 1731–41), where he succeeded in having a Russo-Swedish treaty of mutual defense signed in 1724. He also served as a resident minister in Poland (1726–30, 1744), Prussia (1730–31), and France (1756–60). Bestuzhev-Riumin was a proponent of the alliance with Austria and England against Turkey and Prussia.
