Mikhail Skatkin
Skatkin, Mikhail Nikolaevich
Born July 29 (Aug. 11), 1900, in the village of Kozlovo, now in Konakovo Raion, Kalinin Oblast. Soviet educator. Corresponding member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the RSFSR (1950) and of the USSR (1968). Doctor of pedagogical sciences (1970) and professor (1970).
In the 1920’s, Skatkin worked at the first experimental station of the People’s Commissariat for Education of the RSFSR, where he also completed pedagogical courses in 1925. In the 1930’s he worked at scientific research and teacher-training pedagogical institutes in Moscow. Beginning in 1945 he worked at institutes of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the RSFSR, and beginning in 1968, at institutes of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR.
Skatkin’s chief works dealt with pedagogical methodology, didactics, and the content and methods of polytechnical education. He also wrote standard natural-science textbooks for the early grades of secondary school. Skatkin has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and several medals, including the K. D. Ushinskii Medal (1954).
