Maniu, Iuliu

(yo͞o`lyo͞o mänyo͞o`), 1873–1951, Romanian politician, head of the Romanian National Peasants' party. Born in Transylvania, he helped to organize the Romanian national movement there before and during World War I. In 1918 he headed the Romanian provisional government. As premier (with one slight interruption) from 1928 to 1930, he enacted liberal reforms, which were soon abrogated by King Carol IICarol II,

Maniu, Iuliu

Born Jan. 8, 1873, in Simleud-Silvaniei, Tran-sylvania; died in 1955 in Bucharest. Statesman and political figure in bourgeois-landlord Rumania.

Before World War I, Maniu was one of the leaders of the National Party in Transylvania. From 1919 to 1944 he was a deputy to the Rumanian parliament. In 1926 he become the leader of the National Peasant Party. From 1928 to 1930 and again from 1932 to 1933 he was prime minister. Maniu aided in the spread of fascism and the establishment of a fascist dictator-ship in Rumania; he approved of Rumania’s participation in the war against the Soviet Union. In 1947 he was condemned for espionage and subversive activity against the people’s democracy and served a long prison term.
