Molodezhnaia

a Soviet antarctic weather station, located in Enderby Land (67°40/ S lat, 45°50’ E long.) on the coast of eastern Antarctica. The station has been operating continuously since Jan. 14, 1963. In 1971 it became the main base of Soviet antarctic expeditions and route explorations in adjacent areas. Molodezhnaia consists of more than 70 different structures (including living quarters, scientific laboratories and buildings, a powerful radio station, a power plant, a station for atmospheric soundings by rockets, storerooms, and a fuel storage area). The buildings are situated on ice-free ground in a small antarctic oasis on the shore of Alasheev Bight (Kosmonavtov Sea). The winter staff numbers about 100. Operations conducted at Molodezhnaia include complex scientific observations in aerometeorology, geophysics, glaciology, and medicine; collection and primary processing of meteorological data from all Soviet antarctic stations; and reception and processing of data received from satellites.
