a village on the Rozhaia River, 60 km south of Moscow (now Chekhov Raion, Moscow Oblast), where in 1572 the Russian forces under the command of M. I. Vorotynskii defeated an army of Crimean Tatars and Turks.

Taking advantage of the diversion of Russian forces to the Baltic in the Livonian War of 1558–83, Turkey and the Crimean Khanate intensified their aggression from the south. In 1572, Turkey and the Crimea organized a campaign on Moscow; their army of 120,000 men was commanded by Khan Devlet-Girei I. The battle started on July 26, not far from the confluence of the Lopasnia and Oka rivers. Although the Russians had only about 60,000 men, Vorotynskii, by maneuvering skillfully, defeated Devlet-Girei’s host in several separate engagements and utterly defeated him on August 3 with a surprise strike by Russian reserves at the rear of the Tatar-Turkish army.
