mannose binding protein

mannose binding protein

(1) A protein encoded by MASP1 on chromosome 3q27-q28, and found in the serum and liver, that mediates innate antimicrobial defence by binding to specific cell surface high-mannose oligosaccharides of various bacteria, fungi and possibly also viruses (e.g., HIV), killing them by complement-mediated cell lysis or opsonisation.
(2) Mannan-binding protein (mannan-binding lectin), which is encoded by MBL2.
