Persianinov, Leonid Semenovich
Born Aug. 5 (18), 1908, in the village of Staroe Selo, in present-day Smolensk Oblast. Soviet obstetrician and gynecologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1965); Honored Scientist of the Byelorussian SSR (1958). Member of the CPSU since 1943.
In 1931, Persianinov graduated from the Second Leningrad Medical Institute. From 1951 to 1958 he was head of the sub-department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Minsk and from 1958 to 1967, at the Second Moscow Medical Institute. Since 1967 he has been head of the subdepartment of obstetrics and gynecology at the First Moscow Medical Institute. He also serves as director of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His principal works include those on problems of birth trauma and regulating the process of childbirth.
Persianinov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1968 for a series of works on prenatal prophylaxis of fetal diseases and perinatal mortality. He was awarded the V. F. Snegirev Prize of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR for his monograph Asphyxia of the Fetus and Neonate. In 1960 he was chairman of the All-Union Scientific Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and has been a permanent member of the society’s executive committee since 1961. From 1967 to 1970 he was vice-president of the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is an honorary member of several foreign medical societies.
Persianinov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of the Red Star, and several medals.
