Knizhnaia Letopis

(Book Chronicle), a bibliographical journal and the organ of state bibliography of the USSR.

The first issue of Knizhnaia letopis’ was published on July 14 (27), 1907, in St. Petersburg. Prior to the October Revolution of 1917 the journal was published by the Central Administration of the Press, primarily in connection with the censorship. Every week, in addition to providing information on new books, it listed books that had been removed from sale and published a list of decrees concerning the destruction of publications. Since the October Revolution the journal’s principal task has been to furnish readers with information about newly published books.

Knizhnaia letopis’ has been published in Moscow since 1920. As the publication of the All-Union Book Chamber, the journal serves as the means for the primary bibliographical registration of all new books published in the Soviet Union in the languages of the peoples of the USSR and in foreign languages. A description of non-Russian books is provided in a Russian translation and the original language of the publication is noted. Knizhnaia letopis’ is published in two issues—a basic, weekly edition and a monthly supplement. There is also a separate quarterly issue containing name, subject, and geographical indexes, as well as an annual index of serial publications registered in the journal.
