Milan Vidmar

Born June 22, 1885, in Ljubljana; died there Oct. 9, 1962. Yugoslav scholar in the area of electrical engineering; member of the Slovene Academy of Sciences (1940).

Vidmar graduated from the Vienna Polytechnic Institute in 1907. In 1918 he founded and headed the first electrotechnical faculty in Yugoslavia, at the University of Ljubljana. Vidmar’s principal works concern the construction and use of electric machines and transformers.

Vidmar was a well-known chess player, an international grand master, and an arbiter of the International Chess Federation. He frequently won first place in international chess tournaments (Goteborg, 1909; Vienna, 1917; Basel, 1952; and others). He was a chess theoretician.
