Lepel
Lepel’
a city in Vitebsk Oblast, Byelorussian SSR, near Lake Lepel’. Population, 13,600 (1972). Lepel’ has a railroad station. Industrial, milk-canning, and baked-goods combines, repair shops, a fish-processing factory, and an excavator repair shop are located in the city. There is a museum of local lore. Lepel’ was first mentioned in the 12th century; it became a city in 1802. A children’s sanatorium for tuberculosis of the bones is on the lake.
