LepisosteusLepisosteus(gar), a genus of fish of the order Lepisosteiformes. Its three species are found in the fresh waters of North America and Cuba. Length, up to 2.5–3 m (in exceptional cases up to 6 m). Spawning occurs in the spring; the roe sticks to benthic objects. The fry have a large yolk sac. As they emerge from the eggs, the fry hang motionless, attached to benthic objects. Gars feed on other fishes; they wait in hiding for their prey. They spend the winter in the deep parts of rivers. Gars have some commercial significance. However, they cause harm to the fishing industry by tearing nets and damaging other fish. One species is known as the tropical, or Cuban, gar (Lepisosteus tris-toechus). Lepisosteus
