LeptodactylusLeptodactylusa genus of tailless amphibians resembling true frogs of the genus Rana but lacking a web between the digits. The body length reaches 20 cm. There are about 60 species, distributed in tropical regions of the Americas. Some species care for their young. For example, L. ocellatus makes a ring-shaped ridge of slime that protrudes above the water, and the female deposits eggs in the basin of the ring, which reaches 30 cm in diameter. L. mystacinus deposits its eggs on dry ground under stones or fallen tree trunks; the eggs are enclosed in a foamy mass that protects them from desiccation. During the rainy period the nest is covered with water, and the tadpoles develop in it. The sound emitted by the toads resembles a whistle. Leptodactylus
