(Arabic, “covered by a veil”). Born in Merv, date unknown; died circa A.D. 783, in the fortress of Sanam, near the city of Kesh. Al-Mukanna was the nickname of Hashim ibn Hakim, the leader of an antifeudal and anti-Arab uprising in Middle Asia during the 770’s and 780’s.
