Lerna

an ancient region of the Peloponnesos peninsula in Greece, 10 km south of the city of Argos. According to Greek mythology, Lerna is the site of Heracles’ struggle with the Lernaean Hydra.

Excavations conducted between 1952 and 1957 by the American scholar J. L. Caskey revealed a settlement of many layers that had existed from the early Neolithic period to the late Bronze Age (the middle of the sixth millennium B.C to the third quarter of the second millennium B.C.). The excavations yielded the remains of defensive structures and of dwellings (including the two-story house of a ruler, the House of Tiles, second half of the third millennium B.C.), pottery, and burials from various periods.
