It is a market town with engineering works. Manufactures include hosiery, shoes, pharmaceuticals, boilers, and pottery. Bell foundries were built in 1840; the great bell of St. Paul's Cathedral in London was cast there in 1881. Loughborough's war memorial, with a carillon of 47 bells, was built in 1923.
