biphasic waveform

An atypical 2-step—rather than single curve—pattern of clot formation, which is typical of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and detected by dynamic waveform analysis of changes in light transmission or absorption (LT/A), which occurs with coagulation. The biphasic waveform and gradient of the initial slope of the waveform correlate with the DIC’s severity or progression of clinical conditions.

A waveform used by some defibrillators that discharges energy in two phases (first positive, then negative). The shock applied by a biphasic defibrillator uses 30-40% less peak current at the same applied energy level than a monophasic defibrillator and is both less injurious to the heart and more likely to terminate ventricular fibrillation.
