Lesgaft, Emilii Frantsevich

 

Born 1870, in St. Petersburg; died May 22, 1922, in Petrograd. Soviet geographer and educator. Nephew of P. F. Lesgaft.

In 1892, Lesgaft graduated from St. Petersburg University. From 1894 he worked in the Main Geophysical Observatory for Marine Hydrology and Meteorology. He was author of The Ice of the Arctic Ocean and the Sea Route From Europe to Siberia (1913). From 1907 he was a lecturer on geography in the higher educational institutions of St. Petersburg and taught in Gymnasiums. Lesgaft wrote approximately 50 textbooks on all areas of the geography curriculum—general geography and the geography of Russia, Europe, and non-European countries—which were frequently republished between 1903 and 1927.
