Le Shan, Dr. Lawrence (b. 1920)

Dr. LeShan was head of the Department of Psychology at New York’s Trafalgar Hospital and Institute of Applied Biology for ten years. He is one of the pioneers of parapsychological research in the United States. He served as a psychologist in the U.S. Army for six years before joining the Trafalgar Hospital. He holds a M.S. in Psychology from the University of Nebraska and a Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of Chicago. He has taught at Roosevelt University, Pace College, and the New School for Social Research, among others.

LeShan began exploring psychic healing in hopes of expanding the parameters of orthodox psychotherapy. He taught himself to be a healer mainly through techniques of meditation. This led him to further explore relationships between mysticism, modern physics, and psychic phenomena. LeShan worked with the famous medium Eileen Garrett, spending more than 500 hours with her, and was extremely impressed with her powers of psychometry.

From 1970, LeShan was teaching psychic healing in New York. In 1974, he published his book The Medium, the Mystic and the Physicist (New York). He felt that there are different types of reality, such as “clairvoyant reality,” “sensory reality,” and “transpsychic reality.” He has authored a number of books, which have been translated into eleven languages. They include The Psychology of War, The Dilemma of Psychology, and How to Meditate. LeShan has lectured extensively in the United States, Europe, and Israel.
