Nerekhta

 

a city under oblast jurisdiction and the center of Nerekhta Raion, Kostroma Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Nerekhta River (Volga basin), 46 km southwest of Kostroma. It is a junction for railroad lines to Yaroslavl, Kostroma, and Ivanovo. Population, 26,300 (1973).

Nerekhta has a flax combine, a heel-making factory, an experimental factory producing knitted sportswear, a flax-fiber processing plant, a vegetable drying and dairy combine, a meat-packing plant, a macaroni factory, a brickyard, and other enterprises. Educational and cultural institutions include a medical school, a branch of the Kostroma Historical and Architectural Open Air Museum, and a people’s amateur theater. Founded in the early 13th century, Nerekhta became a city in 1778.
