Aschoff nodule


Aschoff body

A small granulomatous lesion composed of macrophages, lymphocytes and multinucleated giant cells, which surrounds pale eosinophilic collagenous material, classically seen in rheumatic fever-related myocarditis.

Aschoff nodule

A small nodule composed of cells and leukocytes found in the interstitial tissues of the heart in rheumatic myocarditis. See also: Aschoff, Ludwig

Aschoff nodule

A specific microscopic sign of RHEUMATIC FEVER. An area of dead tissue (necrosis) is surrounded by lymphocytes, scavenging cells (histiocytes) and giant cells. (Karl Albert Ludwig Aschoff, German pathologist, 1866–1942).
