NakuruNakuru(näko͞o`ro͞o), city (1989 est. pop. 164,000), capital of Rift Valley prov., W central Kenya. Founded in the early 20th cent. as a center of European settlement, Nakuru is a growing commercial and industrial city. Manufactures include textiles, processed food, and pyrethrum extract. Nearby is Lake Nakuru (c.35 sq mi/90 sq km), a small soda water lake; the surrounding area has been developed as a national park noted for its flamingo haunts.Nakurua city in Kenya, administrative center of the province of Rift Valley. Population 47,800 (1969); railroad junction. There is an airfield in Nakuru. The city is the center of an agricultural region. Pyrethrum is the principal crop; sisal, coffee, and corn are also cultivated. Livestock is raised for meat and dairy products. Nakuru has a textile factory and enterprises of the food and chemical industries. There are also cottage industries. Nakurua lake in Kenya, south of which Mesolithic burials containing nine human skeletons were discovered in 1937 and 1938. The skeletons are considered to be ancient specimens of the Ethiopian race owing to their tallness, long cranium, long narrow face, absence of prognathism, and narrow nose. NakuruNakuru
