In central NE, northeast of North Platte; organized as Taylor County Mar 6, 1855 from unorganized territory (prior to statehood); name changed Jul 23, 1883. Name Origin: For the Loup River, which flows through the county; itself named for the Pawnee Loup Indians. Name is French translation of Pawnee skidi 'wolf.'
