Established: Established on March 3, 1992.
Location:Just off US 395, 12 miles north of Lone Pine, California, and 5 miles south of Independence, California.
Facilities:Interpretive center (é), including exhibits, a bookstore, and theaters. Campsites, lodging, and food are available nearby.
Activities:Self-guided and guided walking tours and auto tour.
Special Features:Site of the Manzanar War Relocation Center, one of ten camps at whichmore than 110,000 Japanese-American citizens and Japanese aliens wereinterned during World War II. Among the visible remains of the camp isthe camp auditorium. In addition, the stonework shells of thepagoda-like police post and sentry house, and portions of otherbuildings in the administrative complex remain, as do concretefoundations, and portions of water and sewer systems throughout thecamp.
