Knox Coast

Knox Coast

the western part of the coast of Wilkes Land in eastern Antarctica, bounded by the Mawson Sea. The Knox Coast extends into the sea as the Shackleton Ice Shelf. With the exception of the Bunger Oasis, it is completely covered with ice, which rises to more than 1,500 m. The Knox Coast was discovered in 1840 by a US expedition led by C. Wilkes and named after the commander of one of the ships of the expedition. Soviet antarctic expeditions explored the coast in 1956–58.
