释义 | Knox, FrankKnox, Frank(William Franklin Knox), 1874–1944, U.S. Secretary of the Navy (1940–44), b. Boston. He joined the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War and also served in World War I. Knox was general manager (1928–31) of the Hearst papers and after 1931 owner of the Chicago Daily News. A strong opponent of the New Deal, he was the unsuccessful Republican candidate for Vice President in 1936. In 1940, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, seeking to create national unity in defense preparations, made Knox Secretary of the Navy. He died in office and was succeeded by James V. Forrestal.Knox, (William Franklin) Frank(1874–1944) journalist, cabinet member; born in Boston, Mass. One of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders in Cuba, he worked as a journalist in Michigan before becoming co-owner of the influential New Hampshire Manchester Union (1912–27). A brilliant administrator, he bought and revitalized the Chicago Daily News (1931–40). Although a Republican, he was Franklin Roosevelt's secretary of the navy (1940–44). |
