MAP1A

A gene on chromosome 15q15.3 that encodes a protein belonging to the microtubule-associated protein family, which are involved in microtubule assembly, an essential step in neurogenesis. The MAP1A protein product is a precursor polypeptide, which is thought to undergo proteolytic processing to yield a MAP1A heavy chain and LC2 light chain. Expressed almost exclusively in the brain, rat studies suggest a role in early spinal cord development.
