a cartographic institution established in Russia in 1797 for the preparation, printing, and storage of topographical maps and atlases. Between 1801 and 1804 it produced the Detailed Map of the Russian Empire and Adjoining Foreign Possessions on a scale of 20 versts (1.07 km) to the inch. In 1812 the Military Topographical Map Depot was established (instituting the military topographical service in Russia), and the map depot became its archives.
