On the western border of the ID panhandle; original county; organized Feb 4, 1864 (prior to statehood). It was previously established by WA Territory in 1861. Name Origin: From the French name 'pierced nose,' for an Indian tribe that called itself Chopunnish. The French term might be better translated as 'mashed' or 'flattened nose.'
