Bauman, Vladimir Ivanovich

 

Born Apr. 9 (21), 1867, in Menzelinsk, Ufa Province; died Mar. 15, 1923, in Petrograd. Russian scientist and mine surveyor.

In 1899, Bauman became a professor at the Petrograd Mining Institute in what was then the first subdepartment of mine surveying in Russia. He was responsible for the fundamental work Course in the Art of Mine Surveying (1905–08), which for several decades was the basic textbook on mine surveying in Russia. Bauman was one of the revolutionary-minded professors who were popular among the student body. His writings were used in developing the first statutes of the Soviet government for mine surveying.
