Kochi prefecture (1990 pop. 825,063), 2,743 sq mi (7,104 sq km), is a mountainous region with fertile coastal plains. Agricultural tools and machinery are produced there.Kochia prefecture in Japan, in the southern part of the island of Shikoku. Area, 7,100 sq km; population, 787,000 (1970), more than half urban. The prefecture’s capital is the city of Kochi. Economically, Kochi is one of the poorly developed agrarian prefectures of the country. The cultivated lands occupy 129,500 hectares. Deposits of copper (Shirotaki) and chromites (Izo and Nagano) are exploited. In 1969, 21,200 people were employed in the manufacturing industry, which consisted primarily of small-scale enterprises. Kochi’s industries include glass and ceramics, paper, and general machine building. The city of Kochi is the principal industrial center.
