Lovozero

 

a lake on the Kola Peninsula, Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. Area, 200 sq km; average depth, 5.7 m; greatest depth, 35 m. The lake is of tectonic origin. It extends from south to north, bordering the Lovozerskie Tundry Massif on the east. The Voron’ia River issues from Lovozero. The construction of the Serebriansk Hydroelectric Power Plant (1970) transformed Lovozero into a reservoir. Water levels fluctuate within 1.55 m; the highest levels are in May and June, and the lowest before the ice breaks up. It freezes in October or early November and opens in April or early May. Lake Lovozero has a twisting shoreline and a large number of peninsulas and islands.
