Mat’e, Militsa Edvinovna

Born July 12 (24), 1899, in the village of Martyshkino, now in Leningrad Oblast; died Apr. 8, 1966, in Leningrad. Soviet historian and Egyptologist; art historian; philologist. Doctor of historical sciences (1945); Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1964).

In 1922, Mat’e graduated from the Petrograd Institute, where she studied with B. A. Turaev, V. V. Struve, and N. D. Flittner. She became a professor at the University of Leningrad in 1947. She began to work at the Hermitage in 1920. Her chief works deal with the culture of ancient Egypt from many aspects and in depth. In her works on ancient Egyptian art, Mat’e resolved questions concerning its periodization, the formation of artistic schools (including the Theban), and authorship.
