Monin, Andrei Sergeevich
Born July 2, 1921, in Moscow. Soviet oceanographer; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1972). Member of the CPSU since 1945.
Monin graduated from Moscow State University in 1942. He worked at the Central Forecasting Institute from 1946 to 1951 and at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1951 to 1965. In 1963 he began teaching as a professor at Moscow State University. Since 1965 Monin has been director of the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Most of his research is devoted to atmospheric physics, general turbulence, and dynamic processes in the ocean and atmosphere. Monin analyzed the physical bases of longterm weather forecasting and substantiated the importance of the interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere in the formation of weather patterns and climate. He has been awarded the Order of the October Revolution.
