maprotiline

 [mah-pro´tĭ-lēn] a tetracyclic antidepressant administered orally as the hydrochloride salt for relief of symptoms of depression. It acts by blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine at nerve terminals; unlike tricyclic antidepressants" >antidepressants, it has no effect on serotoninergic transmission.

Indications
Major depression, bipolar disorder.
Adverse effects
Anticholinergic effects (e.g., dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth), orthostatic hypotension, sinus tachycardia or other arrhythmias, sexual dysfunction, rash, photosensitivity, confusion, seizures, liver toxicity, agranulocytosis, polyneuritis and other findings.
Special considerations
Should not be administered with MAOIs; may be toxic to the liver or kidneys; may cause seizures; may cause arrhythmias or heart failure.
