Miliutin, Georgii Sergeevich

(lurii S Miliutin) Born Apr. 5 (18), 1903, in Moscow; died there June 9, 1968. Soviet composer; People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1964). Member of the CPSU from 1952.

Miliutin graduated in 1930 from the Moscow Oblast Music Technicum, where he studied composition with S. N. Vasilenko and A. V. Aleksandrov. He worked as a composer in various Moscow drama theaters. The Death ofChapaev (1936) and Don’t Touch Us (1938) are among the popular songs he wrote. In 1949 he was awarded the State Prize of the USSR for the songs Lenin Hills, Lilac-Bird Cherry, and The Naval Guard. After the late 1940’s he primarily wrote operettas and made important contributions to the development of the genre; among such works are Commotion Among the Girls (1945), Trembita (1949), Chanita’s Kiss (1957), The Circus Show Is Up (1960), and The Quiet Family (1968). His music is noted for its expressive melodies and lyrical poignancy, and his stage works, for the vividness of character representation. Miliutin also composed music for films.
