DictionarySeesyndromemilk-alkali syndrome
milk-alkali syndrome[′milk ′al·kə‚lī ‚sin‚drōm] (medicine) A complex of symptoms associated with prolonged excessive intake of milk and soluble alkali, including hypercalcemia, renal insufficiency, milk alkalosis, conjunctivitis, and calcinosis. Also known as Burnett's syndrome; milk-drinker's syndrome. milk-alkali syndrome
milk [milk] 1. a nutrient fluid produced by the mammary gland of many animals for nourishment of young mammals.2. a liquid (emulsion or suspension) resembling the secretion of the mammary gland.acidophilus milk milk fermented with cultures of Lactobacillus acidophilus; used in gastrointestinal disorders to modify the bacterial flora of the intestinal tract.milk-alkali syndrome ingestion of milk and absorbable alkali in excess amounts, resulting in kidney damage and elevated blood calcium levels.casein milk a prepared milk containing very little salt or sugar and a large amount of fat and casein.condensed milk milk that has been partly evaporated and sweetened with sugar.dialyzed milk milk from which the sugar has been removed by dialysis through a parchment membrane.evaporated milk milk prepared by evaporation of half of its water content.milk fever an endemic fever said to be due to the use of unwholesome cow's milk.fortified milk milk made more nutritious by addition of milk protein, vitamin A, or vitamin D.homogenized milk milk treated so the fats form a permanent emulsion and the cream does not separate.milk of magnesia a suspension of magnesium hydroxide, used as an antacid and laxative.modified milk cow's milk made to correspond to the composition of human milk.protein milk milk modified to have a relatively low content of carbohydrate and fat and a relatively high protein content.witch's milk milk secreted in the breast of a newborn infant.milk-·al·ka·li syn·dromea chronic disorder characterized by pathologic deposition of calcium in many sites, especially in the kidneys; reversible in its early stages; induced by ingestion of large amounts of calcium and alkali, which were formerly used in the therapy of peptic ulcer; can progress to renal failure. Synonym(s): Burnett syndromemilk-alkali syndrome A condition caused by hypercalcaemia due to excess consumption of dairy products, or due to overuse (> 5g/day) of calcium-containing antacids (e.g., CaCO3) or alkalis (e.g., sodium bicarbonate) for treating peptic ulcer. Clinical findings Although usually asymptomatic, milk-alkali syndrome can cause high urine output, fatigue, nausea, constipation, and pain in the abdomen, back or loin (due to kidney stones). Metabolic derangements may cause renal failure via nephrocalcinosis and inability to compensate for alkalosis and dehydration. Lab Hypercalcaemia, severe compensated metabolic alkalosis, normo- to hyperphosphataemia.milk-alkali syndrome Metabolic disease A condition caused by hypercalcemia due to excess consumption of dairy products, or overuse of calcium-containing–> 5g/day antacids–eg, CaCO3 or alkalis–eg, sodium bicarbonate for treating peptic ulcer Clinical Lethargy, constipation, renal decompensation Lab Hypercalcemia, severe compensated metabolic alkalosis, normo- to hyperphosphatemia; metabolic derangements may cause renal failure through nephrocalcinosis, inability to compensate for alkalosis and dehydrationmilk-al·ka·li syn·drome (milk-al'kă-lī sin'drōm) A chronic disorder of the kidneys, reversible in its early stages, induced by ingestion of large amounts of calcium and alkali in the therapy of peptic ulcer; can progress to renal failure. Synonym(s): Burnett syndrome. milk-alkali syndrome An uncommon condition caused by excessive intake of alkaline medication and calcium. Levels of blood calcium rise and the metal is deposited in various tissues including the kidneys. The blood becomes more alkaline. Kidney failure can occur.Milk-alkali syndromeA chronic disorder of the kidneys caused by the ingestion of large amounts of calcium and alkali in the treatment of peptic ulcer. The disorder is reversible in its early stages but can progress to kidney failure.Mentioned in: Interactions, Electrolyte Disorders, HypercalcemiaBurnett, Charles H., U.S. physician, 1901-1967.
