OnegaenUKOnega(ōnē`gə, ōnā`–, Rus. ŭnyā`gŭ), river, c.260 mi (420 km) long, rising in Lake Lacha, NW European Russia, and flowing N into the Onega Gulf of the White Sea, SW of Arkhangelsk. It is navigable (May–November) except for the rapids in its middle course.Onegaa city under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Onega Raion, Arkhangel’sk Oblast, RSFSR. Situated at the mouth of the Onega River, 7 km from the White Sea and 263 km southwest of Arkhangel’sk. Seaport and terminus of a branch line of the Obozerskaia-Belomorsk railroad. Population, 25,000 (1974). A large center of the lumber industry, Onega has a sawmilling and woodworking combine and a timber transshipping station. It also has a drolysis plant, a factory that produces reinforced-concrete items, a milk plant, and a meat-packing plant. OnegaOnegaenUK
