The bay has many islands, of which the Solovet-skii is the largest, and rocky shoals. The Onega, Kem’, and Vyg rivers flow into the bay, whose depth averages 16 m, with a maximum depth of 36 m. It has strong, mainly tidal currents, and the tides reach 2.72 m. The bay is frozen 185 days out of the year. On the western coast, near Belomorsk, is the outlet of the Baltic-White Sea Canal.
